A-Z West, located on twenty-five acres in the California high desert next to Joshua Tree National Park, has been the testing grounds for Andrea Zittel's A-Z designs for living since 2000. A-Z West is also the site and impetus for other ongoing public projects such as High Desert Test Sites, a series of experimental art sites and the Interlopers Hiking Club, a combination of costume and sport. The artists of Vision Request were invited to A-Z West for the week of May 14th through the 21st to create a collaborative performance and install individual works. This same group of artists collaborated in A Seasome Medley, a lakeside public performance in July, 2006 in Skowhegan, Maine. Just as A Seasome Medley drew inspiration from the local environment in which it was created, Vision Request is also response to the varied histories and associations of Joshua Tree and draws from the precedent of A-Z West. |
